Notice of Proposed Development by a Local Authority

Development: Galway Western Distributor Road (WDR) Cycle Scheme

In accordance with Part XI of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended), and Part 8, Article 81 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (as amended), Galway City Council hereby gives notice of the following proposed development:

Description of the Proposed Development

The proposed scheme includes the enhancement of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure along the 2.9 km stretch of the Western Distributor Road, from Cappagh Roundabout (western end) to Deane Roundabout (eastern end) in Galway City.

Key elements of the proposal include:

  • Cycle and Pedestrian Infrastructure Improvements:

    • Introduction of segregated cycle tracks on both sides of the carriageway from Cappagh Roundabout to Clybaun Roundabout

    • Installation of bollards to existing cycle lanes from Clybaun Roundabout to Deane Roundabout

    • Upgrades to all roundabouts (except Cappagh) to include enhanced cycling infrastructure

  • Crossing Enhancements:

    • Installation of 6 new zebra crossings

    • Upgrade of 2 existing pedestrian crossings

  • Public Transport Improvements:

    • Installation of a new bus stop between Ballymoneen and Clybaun Roundabouts

    • Upgrade of existing bus stops along the entire route

  • Public Realm Enhancements:

    • Upgraded public lighting

    • Landscaping works

    • Drainage amendments

Environmental and Appropriate Assessment Screening

An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Screening Report has been prepared. In accordance with Article 120(1)(b)(1) of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (as amended), it has been determined that an Environmental Impact Assessment Report is not required.

Any person may apply to An Bord Pleanála for a screening determination within 4 weeks of the date of this notice (i.e. by 3 July 2025), by writing to:

An Appropriate Assessment (AA) Screening Report has also been completed and concludes that a full Appropriate Assessment is not required for this development.
